I speak with each patient personally to prepare them for the first visit. If insurance is used, I tell them how to contact their insurance company to verify network participation, information about benefits and copays,and preauthorization if necessary. Patients complete paperwork describing their background and goals.
The first visit is a consultation, usually lasting about an hour. I gather information about why the person is seeking help and do an initial assessment. The patient and I decide if we are a good fit and agree on a plan to address their concerns. Patients tell me they appreciate my frankness and willingness to give lots of feedback and direction.
